Environmental Infection

There is increasing evidence that the healthcare environment is an important source of healthcare-associated infections. Every facility must thoroughly clean its environment to prevent it from developing into a reservoir for pathogens. Exposures to environmental pathogens or airborne pathogens may result in infections with significant morbidity and/or mortality. Environment of care involves construction and renovation; equipment and environmental service needs; utility maintenance and use; emergency management; and more.

Hand Hygiene

Proper hand hygiene is the number one way to prevent the spread of infection. Everyone—healthcare professionals, patients, residents, families, and volunteers—should clean their hands thoroughly and at appropriate times to prevent the spread of disease.

Diagnostics

Diagnostic technologies enable the detection and quantification of pathogen burden. Timely detection of pathogens allows more effective implementation of infection prevention strategies with the goal of reducing transmission.

Decontamination, Disinfection and Sterilization

Exposures to germs on medical instruments and surfaces in healthcare settings can lead to illness in both patients and healthcare professionals. Appropriate disinfection and sterilization practices can help prevent healthcare-associated infections. All invasive procedures involve contact by a medical device or surgical instrument with a patient's sterile tissue or mucous membranes. The level of disinfection or sterilization is dependent on the intended use of the object.

HAIs: Types and Pathogens

Infections can be associated with procedures (like surgery) and the devices used in medical procedures, such as catheters or ventilators. Four categories of infections account for about three quarters of HAIs in the acute care hospital setting: SSIs, CLABSIs, VAPs, and CAUTIs. Infections caused by bacteria such as Clostridium difficile and antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are also common in hospitals.

Health Information Technology

Technology is making a great impact on a core IP duty, which is collection, analysis, and utilization of data. With increasing dependence on health information technology, there continue to be significant changes in how these data are obtained, maintained, analyzed and utilized, including new definitions that support algorithmic detection of infections, electronic file upload capabilities for infection reporting, data assessment, screen-testing and surveillance systems, IT terminology, and validating and maintaining data systems for infection prevention.
