An infection prevention orientation program, this course provides participants with a fundamental understanding of infection prevention and control as well as knowledge on the varied roles and responsibilities of infection preventionists (IPs). This offering helps prepare those who interact with IPs and provides a general framework for appreciating the important patient safety work they lead. Participants will gain valuable knowledge to further engage with IPs in addressing solutions to their challenges. provides healthcare professionals new to infection prevention with a fundamental foundation.

The modules cover the following content areas:

  • Infection surveillance, prevention, and control: A brief history
  • Epidemiology of infectious diseases
  • Basic microbiology
  • Infectious diseases of interest 
  • Basics of surveillance
  • The economics of and business case for infection prevention and control
  • Knowledge Assessment

How do I get contact hours?

To receive contact hours for an online course, you must complete the program in its entirety and complete an online evaluation. Your feedback is not only required by the accrediting organization, but it is vital to development of future programming.

How do I meet requirements to evaluate the program?

Complete the online evaluation from your computer immediately upon completion of the course by using the course survey link provided in the training menu. Once the online evaluation is complete, you will be eligible to obtain your contact hours via the certificate of completion.

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).


Course evaluations will be availablein your online training meny upon completion of the course. All course-related evaluations must be completed within 30 days of course completion. After satisfying all evaluation requirements, a certificate of completion will be available to print and/or for your records indicating CEUs.

Accredited status does not imply endorsement by APIC or the American Nurses Credentialing Center of any commercial products displayed or discussed in conjunction with an educational activity.

Technical Requirements
APIC Online Education Center online learning courses are accessed through a web browser. The web browser you use must accept cookies, run Adobe Flash, and run JavaScript. To check if your browser does these things, visit this page to run a test.
 
APIC courses require a computer that runs Windows XP (or later), has Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 (or later), and Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 (or later). 
 
Apple OS X users need to use a browser that runs JavaScript, Adobe Flash, and has the Adobe PDF Reader installed.
