Legislative Summary
APIC has long been an active advocate for legislative issues
concerning infection control and public health. Each year, APIC monitors
and provides input to the annual appropriations process (the
congressional funding mechanism). Since the mid-1990s, APIC has been
recommending increased funding for public health infrastructure,
specifically for addressing bioterrorism preparedness and antimicrobial
resistance. Infrastructural enhancements are still needed at the local
level, as are resources for funding hospital-based initiatives for
responding to bioterrorist threats and emerging infectious diseases.
APIC continues to lobby for funding in these areas.
CDC Coalition
Part of our appropriations advocacy work entails working directly with
the national CDC Coalition. The CDC Coalition is comprised of more than
100 member organizations, and lobbies for federal funding for public
health programs each year, and carefully monitors the lengthy and
complex appropriations process. APIC recently signed onto a CDC
Coalition group letter to Senate and House Appropriations Committee
Chairs, expressing support for adequate funding for bioterrorism
preparedness.
