CDC issues interim guidance for managing HCP exposure to Zika virus

04/18/2017

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued interim guidance for managing occupational exposures to Zika virus for healthcare personnel (HCP). Although there have been no reports of transmission of Zika virus from infected patients to HCP or to other patients in healthcare settings, transmission related to occupational exposure has occurred in laboratory workers. The interim guidance recommends that HCP adhere to Standard Precautions for all patient care activities, and reminds employers to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Bloodborne Pathogens standard whenever employees have occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, or other potentially infectious materials.
