APIC provided comments to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on the Draft Long-Term Care (LTC) module of the National Action Plan to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections. The module, which focuses on combating HAIs in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), proposes to expand the activities of multiple federal and nonfederal partners to combat HAIs prevalent in these settings. APIC comments were supportive of the goals and recommendations in the module and called for additional support for and promotion of: infection prevention programs, hand hygiene, environmental services, and antibiotic stewardship. The comments also expressed support for the use of the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) within LTCFs, tracking hospitalizations and re-hospitalizations, and standardization of infection prevention data.
